Angola: The (not so) Hidden Reality

THE “MUSSEQUE”

The “Musseques” are slums that are too often seen in and around Luanda. Unfortunately, the level of degradation and poverty is overwhelming. It was difficult not to let the emotions take control.

HAPPINESS?

It is a fact that all these kids had an almost permanent smile in their faces, but the reality is harsh. Maybe they still haven´t realize how different is their reality from the so-called “civilized world”, or “first world”. You can´t help but feel sorry for these kids, but at the same time, their “happiness” (and I have to put in on quotes) is contagious.

NO CLOTHES

Too often I saw kids with no clothes whatsoever, exposed to all the less-than-ideal higiene conditions. No-one should be living like this. No-one.

WATER

A rare commodity. Running and potable water is hard to find.

FUN

Again, happy faces everywhere. Not only they looked happy, they were actually nice, communicative and spontaneous.

DIFFERENT WAYS TO PLAY

The kids in the Musseques play with what they can their hands on.

They just play.
